Self-efficacy and employment:
improving RTW outcomes through targeted assessment

A one-day or half-day training session

Overview

In a shrinking economy, those who are on the fringes of the labour market can find it extra difficult to find and retain work. How a person perceives their own likelihood of success (self-efficacy) has been shown to have a vital link with actual success. The questions then arise: how can we assess a person’s self-efficacy, and how might we help them increase it?

Aim of the course: to equip participants with an appreciation of the crucial role high self-efficacy plays in successful job seeking and job retention, and to apply this to practical work with clients.

Learning objectives: by the end of the session, participants will:

  • Understand what is meant by self-efficacy
  • Have considered the links between, and research on, perceived self-efficacy and return-to-work behaviours
  • Have access to a simple s/e scale by which they can rate clients
  • Feel more confident in using the underpinning concept to help them in return to work coaching, thereby optimising outcomes.

Learning methods: discussion (large and small group), practical exercises, tutor presentation.
